Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom as an Intangible Cultural Heritage
🔸 ชุดไทยเป็นชุดประจำชาติที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว ไม่เหมือนกับชาติอื่น ๆ ด้วยการออกแบบการตัดเย็บ และการปักประดับลวดลายบนผืนผ้าที่ประณีตอันเป็นการพัฒนามาจากการนุ่งห่มแบบไทย สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นโดยใช้ผ้าทอที่เป็นงานฝีมือของช่างไทยในท้องถิ่นต่าง ๆทั่วทุกภูมิภาคที่มีความโดดเด่นเฉพาะตัว สำหรับสุภาพสตรีมีจำนวน 8 ชุด ส่วนของสุภาพบุรุษ มี 3 รูปแบบ คนไทยทุกภูมิภาคมักสวมใส่ชุดไทยในวาระโอกาสต่าง ๆ และเมื่อมีโอกาสสำคัญในชีวิต
🔸 ชุดไทยพระราชนิยมเป็นชื่อเรียกเครื่องแต่งกายแบบไทยของสตรี ซึ่งสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง ทรงริเริ่มให้มีการศึกษาค้นคว้าเครื่องแต่งกายสตรีไทยสมัยต่าง ๆ และออกแบบ เพื่อทรงใช้เป็นฉลองพระองค์ในโอกาสที่โดยเสด็จพระบาทสมเด็จพระบรมชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช มหาราชบรมนาถบพิตร รัชกาลที่ 9 พระราชดำเนินเยือนสหรัฐอเมริกาและประเทศในยุโรปอย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อปีพุทธศักราช 2503 ต่อมา ในปีพุทธศักราช 2522 พระองค์ได้ทรงพัฒนาและออกแบบเสื้อสำหรับบุรุษ ซึ่งเรียกว่า “เสื้อพระราชทาน” ที่เหมาะสมกับสภาพอากาศของประเทศไทย ให้คนไทยไว้ใช้ในโอกาสต่างๆ ชุดไทยพระราชนิยมสำหรับสตรี และเสื้อพระราชทานสำหรับบุรุษสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงการปฏิบัติและสืบทอดงานช่างฝีมือ งานศิลปหัตถกรรมไทยจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นอย่างต่อเนื่องและการออกแบบปรับประยุกต์ให้เป็นเครื่องแต่งกายร่วมสมัย มีแพทเทิร์นในการตัดเย็บ และใช้วัสดุที่ผลิตได้ในประเทศ ซึ่งสะท้อนอัตลักษณ์อันวิจิตรของงานช่างฝีมือชุมชน และในขณะเดียวกันก็สะท้อนความเป็นไทยในภาพรวม ปัจจุบันความรู้ในการสวมใส่ชุดไทยและงานช่างฝีมือที่เกี่ยวข้อง มีการสืบทอดผ่านการเรียนการสอน ทั้งในระบบและนอกระบบ ผ่านหลักสูตรการตัดเย็บและการออกแบบแฟชั่น ทั้งในระดับประกาศนียบัตรวิชาชีพจนถึงระดับปริญญาตรี รวมถึงการศึกษาตามอัธยาศัย เช่น การฝึกอบรมทักษะอาชีพการทอผ้า การย้อมผ้า การปักผ้า และการตัดเย็บเสื้อผ้าชุดไทยที่จัดขึ้นโดยชุมชนและองค์กรไม่หวังผลกำไรต่าง ๆ
🔸 ชุดไทยพระราชนิยมของสตรี และเสื้อไทยพระราชทานของสุภาพบุรุษ ได้กลายเป็นชุดไทยประจำชาติที่เป็นแบบแผน แสดงให้เห็นถึงอัตลักษณ์ของความเป็นไทย และเหมาะสมกับวาระโอกาสต่าง ๆ ก่อให้เกิดความภาคภูมิใจในวัฒนธรรมที่สืบทอดกันมาช้านาน แสดงออกถึงคุณค่างานช่างฝีมือของคนไทยในท้องถิ่น และยังเป็นแรงบันดาลใจ ให้เกิดการสร้างสรรค์ชุดไทยในปัจจุบันและอนาคต ด้วยเหตุที่ชุดไทยพระราชนิยมสำหรับสตรีและชุดพระราชทานสำหรับบุรุษมีการออกแบบปรับประยุกต์ให้เป็นเครื่องแต่งกายร่วมสมัย มีแพทเทิร์นในการตัดเย็บ และใช้วัสดุที่ผลิตได้ในประเทศ เช่น ผ้าฝ้าย ผ้าไหม ผ้าไหมยกดอก ผ้าไหมปัก จึงทำให้ชาวไทยทั่วไปน้อมนำมาใช้เป็นแบบในการแต่งกายชุดไทยในโอกาสต่าง ๆ เช่น การทำบุญ การแต่งงาน งานพิธี งานพระราชพิธี เมื่อเกิดกระแสนิยมจึงมีการส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ ออกแบบตัดเย็บ ออกแบบลวดลายต่าง ๆ เพิ่มขึ้น ทำให้เกิดชุดไทยสำเร็จรูปที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากชุดไทยพระราชนิยมจนแพร่หลายไปสู่สังคมทุกระดับ ช่วยสร้างอาชีพและส่งเสริมเศรษฐกิจชุมชน
🔹 The Thai national dress is a unique cultural emblem, distinguished by its intricate design, tailoring, and exquisite embroidery. Evolved from traditional Thai wrapping and draping styles, it is crafted from artisanal textiles hand-woven by local craftsmen across all regions of Thailand.The collection comprises eight distinct styles for women and three primary patterns for men.Thais nationwide wear these costumes to mark various social milestones and significant life events.
🔹 The term Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom (Thai Royally-Favored Costumes) refers specifically to the standardized female attire initiated by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother. Her Majesty commissioned extensive research into historical Thai women’s dress to design garments for her royal duties while accompanying His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great on state visits to the United States and Europe in 1960. Later, in 1979, Her Majesty also introduced men’s attire known as “Suea Phra Rajathan” (Royally-Bestowed Shirt) - a tailored garment designed to suit Thailand’s tropical climate while maintaining formal elegance.These Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom for women and Suea Phra Rajathan for men represent the continuous transmission of Thai artisanal mastery and craftsmanship from one generation to the next. These designs feature contemporary tailoring patterns that adapt traditional aesthetics into modern attire, utilizing locally sourced materials. This synergy not only showcases the exquisite identity of community-based craftsmanship but also reflects the overarching essence of Thai cultural identity. Today, knowledge relating to the wearing of Thai national costumes and its associated craft traditions is transmitted through both formal and non-formal education. This includes curricula in tailoring and fashion design at vocational and bachelor’s degree levels, as well as informal learning such as community workshops on weaving, dyeing, embroidery, and the tailoring of Thai garments, often organized by community groups and non-profit organizations.
🔹 The Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom for women and the Suea Phra Rajathan for men have become the definitive forms of the Thai national costume,serving as a powerful expression of Thai identity,suitable for a myriad of occasions. These garments foster a profound sense of pride in the nation’s long-standing cultural heritage, showcase the invaluable craftmanship of local Thai artisans,and remain a living inspiration, shaping the evolution of Thai fashion for years to come.Due to their contemporary adaptability and the use of locally-produced fabrics, such as cotton, silk,brocade silk, and embroidered silk; these designs have been embraced by the general public for various occasions, including merit-making, weddings,community rituals, and official ceremonies. As their popularity has increased, there has been growing support for learning, design, and pattern development,resulting in the production of ready-to-wear Thai dress influenced by these royal designs. This has spread across all sectors of society, generating employment and contributing to the development of local economies.
